The story
Marshall Mathers came out of Detroit's battle-rap circuit and became, within three albums, the best-selling rapper of his era. His run from The Slim Shady LP through The Eminem Show fused a cartoonish alter ego with genuinely technical multisyllabic rhyming, and 'Lose Yourself' made him the first rapper to win an Academy Award. He is still releasing — The Death of Slim Shady arrived in 2024 — and remains a reference point for nearly every rapper who prizes syllable-level craft.
