From Suzuki Violin to Bluegrass Fiddle
A classically trained violinist finds her voice in the fiddle tunes her grandmother used to hum in the kitchen.
Elena started the Suzuki method at five, the way a lot of kids with ambitious parents do — daily scales, recital pieces memorized note-for-note, a strict teacher who did not tolerate sloppy bowing. It was seven years before anyone handed her a fiddle tune instead of a concerto.
That first bluegrass jam session, in a college dorm common room, undid everything she thought she knew about what a violin was for.
