The vocal mic I compare everything else against
Shure SM7B
Started using this for podcast recording and now it is my go-to for lead vocal tracking too. Rejects room noise extremely well without needing a treated room, and the tone is forgiving on voices that are a little harsh in the upper mids. Needs a clean gain boost from an interface without much headroom, so budget for that.
Pros
Excellent off-axis rejection, flattering on most voices, built like a tank.
Cons
Low output — needs a solid preamp or in-line gain boost.
